Brazilian official Igor Benevenuto believes up to as many 40 per cent of those involved in football are gay or bisexual.
The 41-year-old became the first FIFA World Cup-ranked referee in football history to come out as gay just last month.
Benevenuto, who is seen as one of the top referees in football, FIFA World Cup admitted at the time that he had been forced to hide his true self for more than 20 years in order to fit in with his peers in the sport.
He has now insisted homosexuality is far more widespread in football than previously thought - despite no serving top-flight male player in England coming out since Justin Fashanu in 1990.
